Saturday Art Walk offers late hours for downtown galleries in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — Downtown art galleries will stay open until 8 p.m. Saturday with special exhibits for the Saturday Art Walk.

Among them are Gallery 9 and the Port Townsend Gallery. Featured artists at Gallery 9, at 1012 Water St., for this month are April Bederman with fiber arts and Katy Morse with acrylic paintings.

Bederman is a fiber artist who was introduced to felt while working summers in Alaska, and took to making hats. When visiting friends in Port Townsend, she was introduced to “nuno” felting, which is felting fine wool into lightweight silk fabric for a lighter accessory. She developed her silk scarves of eco-printing while in Austin, Texas.

Morse’s paintings are medicine paintings, she said.

“Each one tells a different story, Morse said. “They invoke an inner source of reflection, and through the act of painting reveal new understandings. Taking risks on the canvas is a safe space for shifting old patterns.” Her recent work is devoted to her Medicine Woman, her inner healer.

Gallery 9 is open six days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed on Tuesdays. Masks are optional.

The website is at www.gallery-9.com

The Port Townsend gallery, at 715 Water St., is showcasing its 27 co-op members to kick off the new year, organizers said. The gallery offers disciplines in fabric, watercolors, jewelry, wood blocks, photography, acrylics, oils, wood crafts, graphics, beading, ceramics, collages, glass, batik and metal work.

Many of the artists have competed and won awards in regional and national competitions.

The gallery will be open for the monthly art walk until 8 p.m. Visitors can meet the artists and find out more about their work. Light refreshments will be served.

The gallery is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment, as well as from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the first Saturday of each month.
