Salish Sea artist Jill Bliss to speak at Feiro gala

PORT ANGELES — Tickets are on sale for Feiro Marine Life Center’s Fish on the Fence Gala fundraiser Saturday Feb. 10.

Jill Bliss, artist and nature nerd, will take the podium to discuss “Lives Entwined” at the gala at Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St., Port Angeles.

Tickets are $95 per person.

The event includes a buffet dinner, auction, speaker and the presentation of the third Feiro Family Scholarship, in honor of the Center’s namesake, Art Feiro.

Bliss lives in the San Juan Islands. Her art is inspired by the ecosystems of the Salish Sea — a bi-national geographic designation encompassing Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the San Juan Islands, British Columbia’s Gulf Islands and the Strait of Georgia.

Bliss holds degrees in design from the Parsons School of Design in New York City and the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, Calif.

She also is a certified naturalist who spends her summers aboard the MV Odyssey out of Friday Harbor as a naturalist educator.

“I use my design systems training while observing and studying the ecosystem,” she said.

“All the different relationships between plants and animals, and how they shift over time, is fascinating to me and makes its way into my visual work and storytelling.”

Fan favorite “nature medleys” have been featured in a variety of national and international media sites, including The Guardian, Food & Wine and Inhabitat.

Stickers, note cards, and other products featuring her work can be found at shops throughout the Salish Sea region, including at Feiro.

Feiro Marine Life Center celebrates its 10th anniversary as a not-for-profit this year.

The annual Fish on the Fence fundraiser’s title comes from a project inspired by late Port Angeles resident Paul Cronauer, who sought to cover The Landing mall fence with thousands of youth-created ocean-themed art, celebrating the integration of art and science on the Port Angeles waterfront.

Event sponsorships are still available by contacting Melissa Williams, Feiro’s executive director, at 360-417-6254 or melissaw@feiromarinelifecenter.org.
