Sale of late artist’s estate to benefit Northwind Arts Center

PORT TOWNSEND — Northwind Arts Center will hold an estate and art sale according to the wishes of its long-time leader and co-founder, the late Jeanette Best, today and Saturday.

The sale will be from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Best’s home at 60 Carey Court, on Mats Mats Bay in Port Ludlow.

All proceeds from the sale will go to Northwind’s Jeanette Best Memorial Fund for improvements of the recently named Jeanette Best Gallery, home of the Artist Showcase at the nonprofit arts center at 701 Water St.

Shortly before her death in November, Best telephoned Polly Lyle, Northwind’s fundraising committee chair, to discuss her bequest.

“Jeanette was really pleased with the estate sale opportunity that Dennis McDaniel gave Northwind in 2016,” Lyle said.

“She said she wanted to bequeath most of the contents of her home, including her art, to Northwind so that we would have an estate sale for the benefit of the arts center.”

Northwind Board Directors Thya Merz and Nancy Machette met with Jeanette about the sale.

“Jeanette walked us through her home, in which she hosted the Northwind Board of Directors for lunch every Christmas season,” Machette said. “We were impressed by her large studio with paints, papers, easels, glass, kiln — a lot of supplies.”

The art supplies will be sold at a separate sale at the arts center later this year.

The estate sale will include five principle categories of goods.

“Jeanette’s art will grace the walls,” Lyle said. “I think she’d be really pleased to see a concentration of her own wall art and ceramics in her home.”

House plants and deck plants, hand-painted stemware and other serving and kitchen pieces, clothing and holiday decorations are notable offerings.

Donations to the Jeanette Best Memorial Fund may be made on Northwind’s website www.northwindarts.org, at the arts center, at the estate and art sale, or by mail.
