Rocks, gems, jewelry in the spotlight as spring show set this weekend

PORT ANGELES — A feast for the eyes for rock hounds is planned this weekend at the spring 2019 Rock, Gem & Jewelry Show.

The city of Port Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation’s free show, coordinated by the Clallam County Gem & Mineral Association, is set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St.

The show will feature a variety of vendors, a Rock Alley filled with rocks and games for children, and a raffle at 3 p.m. Sunday with such prizes as a jade carving and a new Dremel tool.

Show organizers will crack open and display a geode that has crystals inside.

Featured speakers at the show will talk about rocks found around the Olympic Peninsula and amethyst found at the Little Gem Mine in Montana.

Retired geologist Bob Jackson will present “Big Amethyst at Little Gem Mine, Montana” at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Jackson is known for his four-volume series, “Rockhound’s Guide to Washington.”

He will have specimens he mined from Little Gem, Spruce and Rock Candy mines.

Peninsula College geologist Dann May will tell about “Olympic Peninsula ‘Rocks” at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Port Angeles unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula will provide food, with all sales benefiting the clubs.
