Rock and Gem Show to sparkle at Vern Burton Center

PORT ANGELES — The Rock, Gem & Jewelry Show will host 21 vendors at the Vern Burton Community Center this weekend.

The free show, sponsored by the city of Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Department and coordinated by the Clallam County Gem & Mineral Association, will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the center at 308 E. Fourth St.

The popular show brought in an estimated 3,000 people in 2017, according to Kathy Schreiner, a member of the Gem & Mineral Association and the show’s coordinator.

“Knowledgeable vendors will bring an amazing inventory of rocks, crystals, fossils, minerals, jewelry, gem trees and many other wonderful items,” according to the Gem & Mineral Association website at http://sequimrocks.org/.

Rock Alley will offer children’s games in the atrium. Each child will be given a free spin on the spinning wheel and a free rock, Schreiner said.

The show’s featured speaker will be Dann May, adjunct professor of geology at Peninsula College. He will present “The Cascadia Subduction Zone and the Coming Megathrust Earthquake” in one of the business meeting rooms at the center at 1 p.m. each day of the show.

There, copies of the Peninsula Emergency Preparedness Guide — which was published in February by the Peninsula Daily News — will be available free while supplies last, compliments of the PDN.

At Demonstration Central, demonstrations will be in progress from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday on cabochon making, faceting, wire wrap and metalsmithing. The classes will illustrate classes available at the association’s office at 80 Hooker Road, Suite 5. For more information, see the associations’s website.

A drawing will award a free Clallam County Gem & Mineral Association membership and free class. A raffle will offer jewelry, rocks, a rock tumbler and other items.

Food prepared by the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula will be available for sale.

Among the booths will be one provided free to the Port Angeles Choir to sell beef sticks to help fund a trip to New York City, Schreiner said.
