Recital series to feature organist

PORT ANGELES — Janette Fishell will present “From Stable to Star: Music Celebrating the Coming of Jesus” at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Fishell’s performance will be part of the Margaret Graebner Recital series at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 E. Lopez Ave., Port Angeles.

The recital is free and open to the public. All donations will benefit church facilities.

The program is in three parts.

The Waiting includes “Fuga sopra il Magnificat,” BWV 733, by J.S. Bach; “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland,” BWV 659, by J.S. Bach; “Fantasia on Genevan 107,” by Brenda Portman; and “Epilogue on Geneva 42,” by Brenda Portman.

The Birth includes “In dulci jubilo,” BWV 729, by J.S. Bach; “Allein Gott, in der Höh sei ‘Her,” BWV 662, by J.S. Bach; “Persönent hodie,” by Pamela Decker; “Arietta.” by Thomas H. Kerr; and “March on a theme of Handel,” Op. 15, No. 2, by Alexander Guilmant.

The program will finish with the Revelation featuring Fantasia über “Wie schön leuchet der Morgenstern,” BWV 739, by J.S. Bach; from Nativité du Seigneur, “Desseins éternals” by Olivier Messiaen; and a Festive Voluntary: Variations on “Good King Wenceslas,” by Petr Eben.

Fishell is a professor of applied organ and organ pedagogy as well as chair of the organ department at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Ind.

Fishell has been a solo recitalist at three national conventions of the American Guild of Organists and will present the endowed Saint Cecelia Recital at the guild’s 2024 Biennial Convention in San Francisco.

She frequently tours across the country as well as in Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia.

Fishell is a leading authority on the organ music of Czech composer Petr Eben and is working on a two-volume, six-disc collection of Eben’s complete solo organ works.

She has recently performed the complete organ works of J.S. Bach, César Franck and a recording of Beethoven’s complete works for organ.

Fishell has served as organist and organist/choirmaster at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Greenville, N.C., at the Episcopal Church of All Saints in Indianapolis as well as interim organist at Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral, also in Indianapolis.
