Read and talk books in library discussion groups

PORT ANGELES — Take a break from summer heat and enjoy a cool read while joining a book discussion group at the Port Angeles Library.

The library at 2210 S. Peabody St. will host three monthly discussion groups for adults. This season, the groups will feature titles spanning genres such as contemporary and historical fiction, biography, classics, medicine, history and more.

The 2nd Tuesday Book Discussion Group meets at 11 a.m. the second Tuesday of each month. This group reads a mix of contemporary and historical fiction, classics and nonfiction.

Upcoming selections include “If Today Be Sweet” by Thrity Umrigar in July, “When Breath Becomes Air” by Paul Kalanithi in August and the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Donna Tartt, “The Goldfinch,” in September.

The Port Angeles Literary Society (PALS) meets at 6:30 p.m. the last Wednesday of every month. This group reads a wide variety of contemporary and award-winning fiction, nonfiction, classics and graphic novels.

Selections for the summer months include “First Bite: How We Learn to Eat” by Bee Wilson in July, “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi in August and for September, “Reading Lolita in Tehran” by Azar Nafisi.

Returning in August after a brief summer break is Page2Screen, a book-to-film discussion group that explores themes and issues in classic and contemporary fiction, nonfiction, memoirs and history, as well as the movies inspired by them.

Page2Screen meets at 6:30 p.m. the last Tuesday of each month, with an optional film screening prior to the meeting at 4 p.m. In August, the group will discuss “Me Before You” by JoJo Moyes, and in September, “Billy Lyon’s Long Halftime Walk” by Ben Fountain.

Each book discussion group is facilitated by a library volunteer and supported by the Port Angeles Friends of the Library. To participate, simply read the book and attend the discussion; no reservations are needed, and drop-ins are always welcome.

Alternative formats such as large print, audiobook, e-book and e-audiobook are available for many titles and can be requested online by visiting the library catalog.
