RainShadow Chorale to present concerts this weekend

PORT TOWNSEND — Rainshadow Chorale will present “Voices and Strings” at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The spring concerts will be at First Presbyterian Church, 1111 Franklin St.

Suggested donation is $20 per person, $10 for students.

The concerts will feature a program of classical choral music accompanied by Port Townsend-based pianist Lisa Lanza and a 14-piece orchestra.

The concerts will begin with Haydn’s Missa brevis in F Major, one of the composer’s earliest works.

Gloria in D Major (RV 589), by Vivaldi, features several solo vocals.

The chorale, as was typical in Bach’s time, invites the audience to sing along with them on the first and seventh movements of “Jesu, der du meine Seele” (BWV 78) by Johann Sebastian Bach.

The chorale will sing “Agnus Dei” by Samuel Barber to the music of Adagio for Strings, also by Barber.

“It’s such a joy to be able to program a concert that has both Bach and Barber. It shows that classical music is still alive,” said Laurie de Leonne, the chorale’s artistic director. “It’s a thrill to do choral and orchestral music. This concert is the product of lots of collaboration by singers and orchestra, and I’m excited to bring this to our audience.”

The program also includes an original composition by de Leonne, “Fragile.”

The program will finish with Gabriel Faure’s “Cantique de Jean Racine” and “Ave Verum Corpus” by Mozart.
