Quileute Head Start to host Family First Aid Night

LA PUSH — Quileute Head Start will host its third annual Family First Aid Night from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

The event at 8 By-Yak Loop will feature more than 35 teams of presenters from all over the West End and Clallam County.

Health and Family Manager Rebecca Schwartz said Head Start expects between 400 and 500 attendees this year.

Featured at this year’s Family First Aid Night will be a helicopter from Northwest Airlift, an ambulance, a Clallam County Sheriff’s Office rescue boat and a fire truck for attendees to see.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the state Attorney General’s Office also have confirmed they’ll send teams, said Schwartz.

She said the event began three years ago as an avenue to educate families on lifesaving techniques that can spare the lives of children in the event of an emergency.

“The idea came from my own personal experience when one of my children choked on a grape at a year and a half old, and then stopped breathing at the age of 2, which thankfully I had been educated on how to handle both situations,” Schwartz said.

“At that point I wondered, how many families are prepared to administer first aid while waiting for an ambulance, and just how many would even know where to start.”

In the last two years, the First Aid Night has changed to encompass all ages, from birth to senior citizens, she said.
