Quilcene festival celebrates park, school, Halloween

QUILCENE — More than 200 students, teachers and families turned out for the second annual Halloween Harvest Festival in Quilcene.

Attendance at Wednesday’s festival was “a significant increase from last year,” when a little more than 100 showed up, said Brian Cullin, marketing director for Worthington Park.

The festival was created through a partnership with Worthington Park, Quilcene School and PTK (Parents Teachers Kids).

Began as contest

It began at Worthington Park, with a scarecrow contest, games, popcorn, face painting, pony rides and a bonfire overseen by Quilcene and Brinnon firefighters.

The highlight was the first part of “Where’s the Wizard,” a live performance on a Wizard-of-Oz theme by Quilcene High School students.

The festival then moved over to the high school for the conclusion of the play, followed by an open house and a dinner produced and hosted by the school for the community.

All events were free.

“It’s for the community and to give a high profile to the school and what we have at Worthington Park,” Cullin said.

Worthington Mansion is almost completed, Cullin said. The hope is that it will be ready by Labor Day next year.
