Punching Out Parkinson’s walk originally set Sunday rescheduled for July

EDITOR’S NOTE: This event has been canceled for Sunday and will be rescheduled in July.

PORT ANGELES — The inaugural Punching Out Parkinson’s 5K Walk originally set for Sunday has been rescheduled for July 30.

Sequim Gym personnel notified the Peninsula Daily News of the change on Friday, after the story was published Friday.

The walk in July will be at 10:30 a.m. on the Olympic Discovery Trail beginning and ending at the Morse Creek Trailhead off Strait View Drive east of Port Angeles.

The fee the day of the walk will be $20.

Those with Parkinson’s disease and children younger than 12 who are accompanied by adults are admitted free.

Proceeds will support the Rock Steady Boxing Program at Sequim Gym and the National Parkinson’s Foundation.

The Rock Steady Boxing Program — designed by Rock Steady Boxing in Indianapolis, Ind. — is a non-contact boxing program for people with Parkinson’s disease, said Kevin Pedrey, owner of the Sequim Gym at 145 E. Washington St. and one of the instructors of the class.

The class also offers stretching, balance and mobility training, strength training and tai chi, according to the gym’s website, www.sequimgym.com.

“There is no cure for PD, but ongoing research has supported the benefits of exercise, especially that of higher-intensity types of exercise like boxing,” Pedrey said in a news release, adding that it is the only such program on the North Olympic Peninsula.

“One of the greatest benefits, and one in which I know anyone who has attended our classes know, is the ability of staying positive, having a group of people who support them and who can exercise and work on improving their symptoms in a supportive and fun-loving atmosphere,” Pedrey said.
