PORT ANGELES — In a new event added to the traditional Juan de Fuca Festival lineup, the San Francisco-based band Sam Chase and the Untraditional plus local performer Scott Sullivan will appear in a “Prelude to a Festival” on Sunday.

The Juan de Fuca Foundation for the Arts (JFFA) will host this concert at 5:30 p.m. at the Naval Elks Lodge Ballroom, 131 E. First St.

It will be a blend of folk, rock and original music with space for dancing, said Kyle LeMaire, JFFA executive director.

Sam Chase is a natural storyteller with a voice that sounds like it’s been through a few tales, LeMaire said.

His band, the Untraditional, features Chandra Johnson, who grew up playing violin in Port Angeles. She has since traveled across the country with Chase, playing in bars and performing arts centers.

Sullivan — known around Clallam County as an indie balladeer, surfer and small-business owner — will bring his old-soul-with-a-youthful-spirit songs to the evening.

He’s one of the artists — like Johnson and Chase — who gave online-only “In Your Living Room” concerts in 2020 and 2021.

These musicians are at last doing in-person concerts to warm people up for the Juan de Fuca Festival May 27-29, Le Maire said.

The fest, on four stages at and around the Vern Burton Community Center at 308 E. Fourth St., will bring together dozens of acts in a variety of genres.

Two tickets to the event will be given away during the prelude event Sunday night.

Tickets to the Prelude to a Festival, which are $25 general and $10 for youth, are available at JFFA.org and at Port Book and News, 104 E. First St.

For more information, phone the JFFA office at 360-457-5411.
