Postcards ready for writing in PT

Tener Wade prepares to write a gratitude postcard at Northwind Art’s Grover Gallery in Port Townsend. Free postcards are available at the gallery and at the Port Townsend Library through this Friday as part of the Community Read program so that later this month, the postcards will become a display at the library. PORT TOWNSEND — A community art project is now underway around Port Townsend, and people of all ages are invited to participate by this Friday.

Northwind Art is presenting this free event, “Seeds Are Postcards from the Land,” throughout March.

Local residents and visitors can join in by picking up a specially designed postcard at Northwind Art’s Grover Gallery, 236 Taylor St., or at the Port Townsend Public Library, 1220 Lawrence St.

They can write or draw their own messages of thanks to the land we live on, and drop their postcards in the box at the gallery or library by the end of this week.

The cards will become a display — a community art show — at the library later this month.

The postcard project is just one part of the Port Townsend Community Read project happening all month.

The library has chosen the young adult edition of “Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants,” as this year’s Community Read.

Free copies are at the library, and a list of related activities can be found at PT PublicLibrary.org.

“It is such a beautiful opportunity for community — hundreds of individual voices coming together,” Northwind Art Exhibits Director Michael Vince Snyder DuBose said of the postcard project.

Next month, the library will compost the postcards and plant seeds donated by Saltwaterseeds, a North Olympic Peninsula-based grower.

“We plan to plant [the seeds] in mid-April so the show can be up for a month,” said Library Director Melody Sky Weaver.
