Port Townsend’s Gallery 9 to feature painter, jeweler

Featured artists for September are painter Sandra Smith-Poling and jeweler Judith Komishane

PORT TOWNSEND — Gallery 9’s featured artists for September are painter Sandra Smith-Poling and jeweler Judith Komishane.

Gallery 9 is open at 1012 Water Street, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. five days a week from Thursday through Monday (closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Face masks are required.

Smith-Poling is one of the founding members of Gallery 9 and has over 40 years of experience painting in watercolors and oils. Her father, Southern California painter Craig Smith, was her strongest influence, followed by Arthur Beaumont, Sir William Russel Flint and John Singer Sargent.

Watercolor is her love, with oils, and pen and ink close behind.

Smith-Poling is influenced by the English school of watercolor and said she strives to obtain the maximum effect with the first stroke of the brush, aiming to capture what the eye and mind see and feel in a scene.

Her palette is a balance of permanent, transparent, opaque and dye colors. Her subject matter comes from picturesque city landscapes and nature, especially those of the marine environments, along with boats and classic sailing ships.

She spent 20 years in the Air Force with deployments around the world. For more on her diverse work of paintings from around the globe, see classicpaintings.net.

Komishane has been making jewelry for more than 15 years. She finds a wide variety of materials for her necklaces, bracelets and earrings combing through antique shops, among other places in her travels.

Each piece is unique. Many are custom-made.

“I strive to make a wide variety of styles, colors and price range to suit different people, and because I like variety,” Komishane said. “I love that my jewelry has found a home in many different places.”
