PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend bicyclists will celebrate the beginning of National Bike Month in May with a short May Day Bike Fest on Monday and three activities at the Cotton Building downtown the same day.
These activities include a bicycle tour of the town; a late afternoon social with displays, activities and refreshments; and a celebration of Port Townsend’s Silver Award as a Bicycle Friendly City and an official reading of the Bike Month proclamation.
The bicycle tour, starting at 1 p.m., will showcase some of Port Townsend’s best bicycle and pedestrian facilities for Steve Durrant, a visiting national board member of the League of American Bicyclists.
The league sponsors the national Bicycle Friendly City award program, and all interested community members are invited to participate.
The late afternoon social event will run from 4 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. at the Cotton Building, 607 Water St. The open house will feature bicycling, walking, community history and assets, and share the range of active transportation and recreational activities and programs available in Port Townsend.
Free refreshments will follow an official welcome by David Engle, retired Port Townsend School District superintendent, at 5:15 p.m.
Following the social, everyone is encouraged to walk to the gallery of Port Townsend City Council chambers at 540 Water St. to show support for active modes of transportation and recreation and witness the presentation of Port Townsend’s Silver Award as a Bicycle Friendly City. An official reading of Port Townsend’s Bicycle Month Proclamation will immediately follow.
