Port Townsend Symphony to perform Sunday

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra will present its February concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chimacum High School Auditorium.

In addition to the concert, there will be an open dress rehearsal this evening at 7 p.m. at the auditorium, 91 West Valley Road.

Attendees are strongly encouraged to wear a high-quality mask for both the concert and the dress rehearsal. This is a free concert, with donations welcome.

Three-time Latin Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto will perform.

A master pianist, composer and arranger, Neto is one of the most important Brazilian musicians working today, organizers said.

He has performed and his compositions have been played around the world, including the Seattle Symphony, NDR Big Band in Hamburg and Swiss Jazz Orchestra. He taught at Cornish College of the Arts for 26 years, performs with his groups Quineto and Trio and was inducted into the Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame in 2012.

At this concert, Neto will solo on his Milonga da Emilia for piano and orchestra. A precursor to the tango, the milonga originated in Rio do Sul region of Brazil and northern Argentina. This work was premiered in 2018 by the Den Jyskke Musikkonservatorium Symphony Orchestra in Aarus, Denmark.

Also on the program are Mysterious Mountain by Alan Hovhaness and the Petite Suite for orchestra by Port Townsend resident Karl Bach.

Mysterious Mountain, the title given to Symphony No. 2, is perhaps Hovhaness’ best-known composition.

Commissioned by Leopold Stokowski, it was premiered by the Houston Symphony on a national radio broadcast in 1955.

Bach was a member of the orchestra for 13 years, serving for two years as president of the board of directors. He conducted the PT Summer Band for 17 years. As a composer, he has 40 works listed in the My Score catalog. His Petit Suite for Orchestra was premiered in 2003 by the Port Townsend Orchestra.

More information is available on the orchestra website, ptsymphony.org.
