Port Townsend Symphony schedules concert

CHIMACUM — The Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra will present its April concert on Sunday with an open dress rehearsal on Friday.

Both will be at the Chimacum School auditorium at 91 West Valley Road. Admission is free but donations are welcome.

The dress rehearsal will be at 7 p.m. Friday. The concert will be at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Attendees are strongly encouraged to wear a high-quality mask for both the concert and the dress rehearsal.

This concert features bassoonist Ian Schneiderman performing Mozart’s Bassoon concerto.

Born and raised in Seattle, Schneiderman performs a diverse array of solo, chamber and orchestral music. In the Pacific Northwest, he has played with the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra and the Tacoma City Ballet.

He also has coached young bassoonists of the Seattle Youth Symphony, Cascade Youth Symphony and the Marrowstone Music Festival.

Of the many bassoon concerti written by Mozart (up to 27 by one count), only one remains, organizers said.

“This concerto in B-flat major is one of the more popular in the bassoon repertoire and is required in many bassoon auditions. With three movements, Mozart reused a theme from the second movement in the opera, The Marriage of Figaro.”

Also on the program is Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8. This symphony was written as a thank you in response to his election into the Bohemian Academy of Science, Literature and Arts. While Dovorak never copied a melody, he did include ideas from the folk music of Bohemia throughout this piece.
