PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra will present a chamber concert at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The free concert, part of the symphony’s Chamber Music series, will be at the Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden State Park, 200 Battery Way.

This concert features conductor and soloist Matthew Daline and soloist Kristin Smith.
The program will begin with Daline and Smith playing Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in C minor, BWV 1060R. This concerto was originally written by Bach for violin, oboe and string orchestra and was later arranged for two harpsichords and orchestra; it is usually performed for violin and oboe or, as it will be on Sunday, for two violins.
They will be followed by the string orchestra performing “Adoration” by Florence Price.
Florence Price was an early 20th century composer who struggled for acceptance due to her African American race and her gender; much of her music was lost after her death until a trove was discovered in 2009.
Following the intermission, the string orchestra will perform Hindemith’s “Trauermusik” (German for “Funeral Music”) for viola and string orchestra, with Daline performing the viola solo.
Hindemith was in London to premier a viola concerto on the BBC the day after King George V died; when the concert was canceled for a musical tribute to the king, Hindemith wrote “Trauermusik” for the tribute concert in six hours.
The concert will conclude with Béla Bartók’s “Romanian Folk Dances for String Orchestra” Sz.56 BB 68.
Matthew Daline is a Port Townsend High School graduate who enjoys an international career as a violin/viola soloist, chamber musician and educator. He has taught at Bowling Green University in Bowling Green, Ohio, and at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La., and has recently relocated back to Port Townsend.
Smith was a member of Alberta’s Edmonton Symphony Orchestra before retiring to Port Townsend.
Smith plays in regional orchestras and chamber ensembles and enjoys teaching with the OCEAN and YEA Music! Programs.
