Port Townsend sets holiday events

PORT TOWNSEND — White lights are decorating trees in downtown Port Townsend’s historic district as part of 2020’s special holiday celebration.

Port Townsend Main Street is coordinating a winter lights campaign through February that is funded by lodging tax receipts and participating property owners.

The 2020 Port Townsend Main Street Holidays promotion urges residents to patronize local businesses in the fourth quarter of the year.

Many businesses are decorating their windows. Merchant Winter Window contest judging is set for Nov. 27, with winners to be announced Nov. 28.

“Keep your eye out for the hidden woodland creature in the window displays, which is part of a new ‘Winter Window Wander’ promotion,” a press release said, adding that more details would be provided in coming days.

Businesses are being urged to extend Small Business Saturday — traditionally the day after Thanksgiving — to an entire week, according to Port Townsend Main Street.

“By extending Small Business Saturday over a week, it offers the chance to have a safer, more socially distant event,” a press release said.

“Merchants are also encouraged to offer curbside pickup and online shopping options as well.”

Santa will light the Community Tree and the Fire Bell Tower from the Kiwanis Choo Choo at about dusk on Dec. 5.

The event will be shared virtually on Facebook Live on the Port Townsend Main Street Facebook Page.

The Holidays in Port Townsend are sponsored by participating local businesses, Homer Smith Insurance, Port Townsend Kiwanis and Enjoy Port Townsend.
