Port Townsend jazz concert looks to benefit Social Justice Camp for teens

PORT TOWNSEND — Jazz singer Carla Main will share her singing talents in a concert at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Port Townsend Friends Meetinghouse.

Main will be joined by Ted Brancato on piano and Dirk Anderson on bass at the performance at the meetinghouse at 1841 Sheridan St. at the corner of 19th and Sheridan streets in Port Townsend.

Off-street parking is available for several cars, but carpooling to the event is encouraged.

Attendees are urged to come early at 6:30 p.m. to enjoy coffee, tea and a dessert.

Admission will be a suggested donation of $10.

All three musicians are from Port Townsend.

A favorite of local music fans, Main’s concerts have typically sold out in the past, organizers said.

Brancato recently moved to Port Townsend after a 35-year career as a jazz pianist, musical director and recording studio owner/operator in the New York City area. Anderson has played bass behind a number of the area’s top jazz musicians since moving to Port Townsend more than 10 years ago, recently appearing with the Ted Brancato Trio and with Tony and the Roundabouts.

“Having the opportunity to present this music in an intimate and quiet listening room like the PT Friends Meetinghouse is a real joy,” Anderson said.

Proceeds will be donated to a new Port Townsend Quaker effort: the Social Justice Camp for teens.

The Social Justice Camp is a weeklong program in which teens visit key civil rights locations in the Seattle area and hear first-person accounts by people whose lives have been forged by the struggle for social justice in the history of the United States, according to concert organizers.

The students produce art and music and make plans for involvement in their own lives.
