Port Townsend group to strip holiday music to barest form

PORT TOWNSEND — The Wild Rose Choral will strip down holiday music to its barest form during a cappella concerts tonight and Sunday.

A cappella singing requires no instruments or accompaniment, said Doug Rodgers, Wild Rose Chorale’s newest member.

“I like a cappella singing because you can just do it,” he said.

“There’s nothing to carry around except the voice that you already have with you.”

The Wild Rose Chorale and Friends holiday concerts will take place at 7 tonight and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 1111 Franklin St., Port Townsend.

Entry is by the suggested donation of $15 at the door.

Joining the eight-voice a cappella ensemble for the annual all-ages choral program are the Summertime Singers, directed by Colleen Johnson, and the Port Townsend Youth Chorus, directed by Leslie Lewis.

Lewis also leads the Wild Rose Chorale.

“We’ll be bringing you a big dose of holiday spirit,” said J.E.S. Schumacher, Wild Rose Chorale member.

These concerts are a holiday tradition, Schumacher continued, and provide “a rich offering of variety and voices, from the very young to well-seasoned singers.”

Rodgers said all the groups add different kinds of influences to the mix.

On the program are familiar Christmas tunes such as “We Three Kings,” “Deck the Halls” and “Silent Night,” but in custom arrangements, organizers said.
