Port Townsend Gallery Walk ushers in the colors of spring

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Gallery Walk returns this Saturday.

The Gallery Walk, lasting from 5:30 p.m. until about 8 p.m., encompasses several downtown venues, all of which charge no admission to see the art and meet the artists who create it.

Here is a sampling of events:

Arscott at Gallery 9

Gallery 9 at 1012 Water St. will present oil paintings by Ann Arscott, featured artist for March.

Arscott’s new work celebrates the drama of the sun in all its forms: the play of sunlight on water, on mountains, in shadows as dusk falls. As spring approaches, Arscott’s “Sun Effects” theme reminds us of the warmth of the light.

Arscott travels the globe for months every year, and her paintings convey geographic as well as universal experience. She gets her inspiration from the natural beauty she encounters on her global trampings including wildlife, glorious skies and native foliage. This year’s travels included Australia, New Zealand and the South Seas, with one of the new paintings inspired by a play of light on the dramatic Milford Sound.

The artist said her creative sources come from inside and outside: “We are there and we are living it. Photos are a jumping-off place and I take it to where I want it to go from my imagination; none of it is ever literal.”

She cites the atmospheric paintings of impressionist J.M.W. Turner as an influence in her style, and here in Port Townsend, she studied with Diane Ainsworth.

She will discuss her work during the Gallery Walk from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
