Port Townsend Gallery to reopen ‘carefully’ Friday

PORT TOWNSEND — Hummingbirds and flowers will adorn the walls of the Port Townsend Gallery when it reopens on Friday.

The gallery, at 715 Water St., will feature the nature photography of Beverly McNeil and the mixed media creations of Margaret Woodcock at the opening from noon to 4 p.m. and throughout the month of July. Work by its other artists also will be on display.

Although Port Townsend Gallery Walk, usually held on the first Saturday of the month, has been canceled for months because of precautions against COVID-19, the Port Townsend Gallery will reopen carefully Friday, said proprietor Mitchel Osborne.

Entrance is limited to six people at one time. The gallery will require visitors to wear face masks and practice social distancing. It will provide disposable masks if visitors lack them and gloves if they are wanted.

McNeil’s favorite subject is birds, especially hummingbirds, Osborne said.

In the past six years she has photographed many of the 52 species of hummingbirds in Costa Rica, spending three to four weeks for each visit. Last winter she explored northwest Ecuador, which boasts 126 hummingbird species.

As a featured artist for July, she is presenting three different framed triptychs of hummingbirds of Ecuador, along with other bird photos.

Margaret Woodcock’s mixed media flowers will be exhibited at the Port Townsend Gallery.

Woodcock has grown particularly interested in flowers as a subject matter, Osborne said.

The mixed-media paintings she is presenting at the gallery use floral compositions. Collage is applied to a prepared wood surface and then the painting is developed with, first, layers of thin acrylic color, then oil colors, cold wax medium and glazing.

In addition, she is exhibiting collages and hand-pulled prints that she develops at Corvidae Press in Fort Worden.

Both use natural elements as their subject matter.

The Port Townsend Gallery is open from noon to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
