Port Townsend Film Fest red carpet welcome this afternoon

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Film Festival’s visiting filmmakers will be greeted with pomp and pageantry during a red carpet arrival at 4 p.m. today.

They will arrive in their chosen vintage car, provided by the Rakers Car Club, at the base of the Taylor Street stairs at Haller Fountain.

That will be followed at 4:30 p.m. by dinner on Taylor Street and then an award ceremony for one of the festival’s special guests, John Cooper, former director of the Sundance Film Festival, at the Rose Theatre at 6 p.m.

All is Lost, a film starring Sundance founder Robert Redford, will be screened followed by a post-film conversation.

The film festival opened on Thursday with a welcoming ceremony at 5:30 p.m. and the initial screenings of some of the nearly 60 films that are being offered during the four-day festival.

Venues are the Rose Theatre, the Rosebud and the Starlight Room in the 200 block of Taylor Street and the American Legion Hall and the Cotton Building, both on Water Street.

All are within walking distance of each other.

In addition, free movies will be shown outdoors on Taylor street each night, culminating with a showing on Sunday of Napoleon Dynamite, a film created by the other two special guests of the festival, Jared and Jerusha Hess.

An awards ceremony for the husband-and-wife team is planned at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall. After the screening will be a discussion about the film.

Although lockdowns are a thing of the past, COVID-19 remains active in communities and so the film festival is requiring masks in indoor venues and recommends them for outdoors.

Passes are on sale, and full program information is available at www.ptfilmfest.com.
