Port Townsend author wins sci-fi award

PORT TOWNSEND — Louise Marley of Port Townsend, who writes under the pen name Louisa Morgan, has won the 2020 Endeavour Award for her 2019 novel “The Witch’s Kind.”

This is her third win of the prize honoring distinguished science fiction or fantasy books by Pacific Northwest authors.

Joining Marley for this year’s win is Matthew Hughes of Victoria, B.C., for “What the Wind Brings.” The authors will share the $1,000 award from the nonprofit Oregon Science Fiction Conventions, Inc.

Set in Port Townsend and Brinnon, “The Witch’s Kind” is the story of a farmer and an artist, both female, making their ways as independent women in the aftermath of World War II.

The Endeavour Award “doesn’t get tons of attention outside the Pacific Northwest, but it’s rather close to my heart. We have so many writers here,” Marley noted.

Since “The Witch’s Kind,” she published “The Age of Witches,” and is now at work on a yet another novel.
