Port Ludlow artists in the spotlight

Artist of the Month, Jeweler of the Month named

PORT LUDLOW — The Port Ludlow Art League’s Artist of the Month in November is Janice Gruber and its Jeweler of the Month is Maggie Smith.

Gruber works in oils and acrylics, using brushes and palette knives to depict subject matter with strokes of color, simulating reflected light, organizers said.

“She’s able to transform a conventional bouquet of flowers into a beautiful garden on a perfect summer day or a couple of boats tied up to a dock into the sound of boats gently rocking against the dock in a light breeze,” according to a press release said.

Her artwork in on view at Port Ludlow Sound Community Bank at the corner of Oak Bay Road and Osprey Ridge Drive or online at portludlowart.org.

Smith has been making beads and designing jewelry for over 25 years.

Her inspiration for lampworking began when she visited, and took classes from, Andrea Gurino, an award-winning artist, at her Port Townsend art studio. Smith went on to hone her talent by attending art classes at the Pratt Fine Art Center in Seattle.

She is now a member of the International Glass Bead Society.

Many of her art pieces are collaborative efforts with her daughter, Shelby.

In addition, Smith works with other artists to design original beads and glass art.

“When I work with glass, unexpected things just happen,” she said.
