Port Ludlow artists exhibit their work

PORT LUDLOW — “In Praise of Trees” art exhibit at the Bay Club is running through March and April at 120 Spinnaker Lane in Port Ludlow.

The exhibit, sponsored by the Port Ludlow Art League, has the theme of spring, “given that trees symbolize life, growth, renewal and rebirth,” organizers said.

Visitors can vote for their favorite artwork. As an added bonus, Diane Walker’s artwork will be on display in the Bay Club’s lobby through April.

In the month of March, the art league’s artist of the month is Mike Jackson and the jeweler of the month is JoElla Johnson.

Mike Johnson produces resin art, which involves combining epoxy with pigments and found objects to create artwork that has an impermeable, glass-like appearance.

His artwork is on view at the Sound Community Bank and online at www.port ludlowart.org.

A reception for Mike Johnson is set for 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. March 13 in the lobby of the bank and from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the adjacent Port Ludlow Art League Gallery. The bank and gallery are located at the corner of Oak Bay Road and Osprey Ridge Drive in Port Ludlow.

JoElla Johnson uses metal clay to create her jewelry. Metal clay consists of microscopic particles of silver, copper, bronze or gold suspended in an organic binder. Artists can press designs or textures into the metal clay so that when the metal clay is fired, the binder burns away, leaving the metal with the imprint.

Because she was born and raised in Alaska, many of her jewelry designs include textures from Salmonberry, Hemlock and Alder foliage and from the geometric patterns of Alaska’s native culture.

During March, JoElla Johnson’s jewelry is on display at the Port Ludlow Art League Gallery, the Sound Community Bank and online at www.port ludlowart.org.

The gallery is open from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
