Port Ludlow Art Leagues shines spotlight on artist, jeweler

PORT LUDLOW — The Port Ludlow Art League is featuring Alice Thuring as Artist of the Month and Janice Gruber as Jeweler of the Month in July.

Thuring works with pen and ink or oil using palette knives and brushes to capture the beauty of wildlife and landscapes in Idaho and Washington.

She studied art history and painting at the University of Washington, Whitman College and Boise State University. Her artwork has been showcased in art galleries in Idaho and Washington.

This is her first art exhibit in Port Ludlow.

Although Gruber spends most of her time creating acrylic and oil paintings, she also creates jewelry featuring sterling silver, beads and freshwater pearls.

She often enhances her jewelry designs with a painted background.

The work of both can be seen at the Sound Community Bank branch at the corner of Oak Bay Road and Osprey Ridge Drive in Port Ludlow and online at www.portludlowart.org.

Gruber’s jewelry also can be seen at the Port Ludlow Art League Gallery, located next to the bank. The gallery is now open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

Scholarships

The Port Ludlow Art League is awarding scholarships to Audrey Drake and Lacey Bishop.

Drake, who graduated from Port Townsend High School, is pursuing a degree in Visual Arts at the University of Washington.

Bishop, who graduated from Chimacum High School, is pursuing a degree in Art History at Pacific University in Oregon.

The Port Ludlow Art League provides scholarships for graduating Jefferson County high school seniors and continuing or returning students for study in community colleges, universities, vocational and technical training institutes.

League members consider not only students interested in art, but also those with their eyes on other creative areas of study.

To raise funds for scholarships, the Port Ludlow Art League members created 6-inch by 6-inch plaques of original art for sale to the public and have auctioned gift baskets, artwork and art classes at their art fairs.

“The Port Ludlow Art League wishes both students great success in their educational pursuits,” according to a press release.

“In addition, we’d like to thank everyone for helping us build the scholarship fund.”
