Port Ludlow Art League plans reception

PORT LUDLOW — The Port Ludlow Art League will host a reception for Denice Craig Tweedy from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The reception will begin in the lobby of Sound Community Bank, 9500 Oak Bay Road, then move to the league’s adjacent gallery at 5 p.m.

Tweedy works with color, light and shadow through the use of watercolors and batik, drawing her inspiration from nature.

Batik, which originated on the island of Java, Indonesia, involves the repetitive process of wax-resisted dyeing applied to cloth.

Tweedy affixes her paintings to canvas then treats them with artist-grade varnish to render them dust- and water-resistant.

Pamela Raine likes to challenge herself with different mediums.

For this show, she has tapped into her love of ceramics to create pendants with organic cracks and crevices.

She achieves that technique using sodium silicate mixed with slip, a finely sifted wet clay in a lighter color, which she paints onto wet clay.

Tweedy’s Batik artwork and Raine’s jewelry will be on display in the gallery from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays throughout July.
