Port Angeles storyteller to spin tales for children

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles storyteller Dennis Duncan will entertain children at the Juan de Fuca Festival.

The free performance for elementary school-aged children will be in a tent on the lawn of the Vern Burton Center from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Duncan is past president, of the Story People of Clallam County.

When Duncan retired from teaching science in Clallam County schools, he continued to visit to tell stories to children. Five days a week he spent several hours a day visiting local schools.

“Dennis’ stories have delighted generations of kids in the Port Angeles schools, said Erran Sharpe, president of the Story People board. “He often has people come up to him 20 years after he was in their classroom. They will still remember specific stories he told, and how the story changed their life.”

Now, almost 25 years later, many of those children’s children are going to school and hearing Duncan tell stories.

“Dennis has cut back his storytelling time and fewer children are getting to hear him, so I am excited to bring his storytelling to the public at the Juan de Fuca Festival,” Sharpe said. “This is a rare opportunity for all kids to share in the magic.”

The nonprofit Story People Of Clallam County is dedicated to bringing all forms of live story telling to the North Olympic Peninsula.

Information about public events, group membership and about storytellers available is on the web at clallam storypeople.org.
