Port Angeles’ Second Weekend Art Walk offers fiber art, painting, ceramics, music

PORT ANGELES — Fiber artists balance aesthetics and utility to create a great range of threaded creations.

This Saturday, many forms of fiber art — spinning, felting, weaving, quilting, painted silk, knotting, crochet, costumes, fiber paintings, fiber sculpture, rugs and jewelry — will be on display at Studio Bob for September’s Fiber Arts Exhibition.

The non-juried exhibit, sponsored by Cabled Fiber &Yarn, acts as an extension of the 12th North Olympic Fiber Arts Festival Exhibition, which occurs annually in Sequim each October. (Those who wish to participate must enter art by 9 p.m. Saturday online at uniqueasyou. submittable.com/submit. Entries costs $15).

The Fiber Arts Exhibition’s opening coincides with Port Angeles’ Second Weekend Art Walk.

So, head to Studio Bob, 118½ E. Front St., from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday to meet the artists and enjoy drinks at the Loom next door.

The exhibit also will be open from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. During the Arts &Draughts festival weekend Sept. 23-24, the exhibit will be open from noon to 3 p.m. each day.

Other attractions at Second Weekend Art Walk include:

Imagine it Framed, 625 E. Front St., will host a reception for painter Erin Alward today from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Born and raised in Port Angeles, Alward’s childhood consisted of hours spent sketching as the radio moved her.

“I found inner peace and found that I could express myself easier,” Alward said in a news release.

Now, when Alward isn’t painting boat names in the shipyard, painting on stock cars or creating signs, murals or life-size cartoons, she paints at her desk — losing time with every brushstroke of color as she did in her youth, she said.

“Memories conjure images of No. 2 pencils, charcoals (black and white at first, then color), acrylic, oils, egg tempura, my first box of crayons — all those colors,” Alward said.

Bar N9NE, 229 W. First St., will feature local band SuperTrees and Port Angeles artist Cyndy Eaton today at 9 p.m. for 2nd Friday Art Rock (2FAR).

A $3 cover charge will support the featured band and artist.

SuperTrees plays “authentic music, both old and new,” including a David Bowie tribute by Steve Koehler (lead vocals, guitar), a blues revue by Harry Bidasha (vocals, drums), a new song about eBay by Rudy Maxion (vocals, bass) and a new song about getting old by Dan Lieberman (vocals, guitar), according to a news release.

Eaton creates works of metal, wood sculptures and multimedia, in addition to her work as a nurse and gardener.

During 2FAR, she will demonstrate the Turkish art of marbling, a technique that transforms color pigments from a pan of oily water to paper.

Harbor Art, 110 E. Railroad Ave., will host a reception for ceramic artist Cindy Elstrom from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Elstrom’s ceramics are described as representing “art for daily life,” artfully adorned with an eye toward function, too.

Since moving to the Olympic Peninsula in 2006, Elstrom said she has been “profoundly influenced” by the community of artists and surrounding natural beauty.

“The textures, designs and earth tones that have evolved as the focus of my work are reflections of ‘finding my way home,’ ” Elstrom said in a news release.

Although Elstrom took up art full time 11 years ago, she has been working with clay since the 1980s while working as a teacher and social worker.

She currently teaches community education pottery classes at Peninsula College.

Elstrom’s years of working with people are reflected in the focus of her sculptural work: human form and emotion, she said.
