PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles High School East Park Avenue Players will present “A Wrinkle in Time,” adapted for the stage by Morgan Gould from the book written by Madeleine L’Engle.
The curtain will rise on the show at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center, 304 E. Park Ave.
Ticket prices are $10 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens 60 and older. Children under 10 will be admitted free of charge. Tickets are to be purchased at the door.
L’Engle’s book, written in 1962, won the John Newbery and Caldecott Medals, the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, Children’s Legacy Literature Award and The Edgar Award for Best Young Adult Literature among others.
The story combines the genres of science fiction and fantasy as it explores the themes of moral responsibility and the power of love, said Carman Geyer, district spokesperson.
Meg’s father, a brilliant and controversial physicist, disappears after finding a new planet and experimenting with time travel to get there. Five years later his family, the Murray family, is still shattered and struggling to adjust to his absence.
Then they meet three unusual beings — Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which — who know where he is and how to tesser through time to get there. They send Meg, her brother, Charles Wallace, and their friend, Calvin, through a wrinkle in time to save their father and the universe from being overcome by the darkness of the “It.”
“The adaptation does a pretty good job of following L’Engle’s story, and it uses theatrical conventions to create the magical world L’Engle envisioned in her book,” Geyer said.
The cumulative performance showcases the work of drama students from the advanced drama class at Port Angeles High School under the direction of Kelly Lovall.
Students include seniors Liam Getzin, Skylar Jackson, Zoe Williams, Maleeah Casey and Malleck Braun; juniors Alana Baker and Lennon Daigle; sophomore Bailey Robinson and freshman Kaylie Mast.
This production is supported by, and is in partnership with, students from the Port Angeles High School Thespian Society, under the direction of Mark Valentine, and the Theatre Tech class, taught by Patric McInnis.
Student tech crew includes senior Avery Saul; juniors Dana Duffy and Rayna Mathinson; sophomores Xavier Caskey, Cameron Catterson, Brenna Murphy, Laurel Williams and Cole Reaume; and freshmen Avery Martin and Josey Cooley.
