Port Angeles High explores Shakespeare gender-bender

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles High School Thespian Society will present William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” directed by Kelly Lovall, at 7 p.m. Wednesday through next Saturday.

Tickets are $8 for general admission and $7 for students at the Port Angeles High School auditorium, 304 E. Park Ave. Children 10 and under will be admitted free.

“Twelfth Night, or What You Will,” a comedy, was written by Shakespeare sometime around 1601–02. Its first recorded performance, according to Wikipedia, was Feb. 2, 1602.

The story surrounds twin siblings, Viola and Sebastian, who survive a shipwreck. They are separated and believe the other to be dead.

Viola disguises herself as a man to hide herself and stay safe from the harsh realities of the world. She falls in love with Duke Orsino, who is in love with a countess, Olivia.

After meeting Viola, Countess Olivia falls in love with her, thinking she is a man.

The story also follows the intrigue of Olivia’s uncle, a would-be suitor, and her servants.
