Port Angeles garden walk to look ahead to fall

PORT ANGELES — Fall gardening means cool-weather crops and an abundance of seasonal fruit and veggie recipes.

Think roasted acorn squash with butter and brown sugar, sauteed Brussels sprouts with bacon and onions, spicy sweet potato fries, crab apple jelly on sourdough and rich pumpkin bread.

Fall gardening, seemingly far off, requires planning, and now’s not a bad time to start, according to WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners.

Home gardeners can get timely advice about vegetable and berry gardening from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday during Lunch in the Garden, a free tour of the Fifth Street Community Garden, 328 E. Fifth St.

WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners will guide attendees through a one-hour tour of the community garden to demonstrate what vegetable gardens require at this time of year. They will also prime gardeners to potential problems that may arise despite their best efforts.

Following the garden tour, Master Gardeners will turn to the final step in vegetable gardening: reaping the rewards and preserving them. They will share ideas of how to use and preserve garden produce.

Master Gardeners Bob Cain, Laurel Moulton, Jeanette Stehr-Green, Audreen Williams and Lois Bellamy lead the walks. Betsy Wharton and Laura Orton will demonstrate how to use seasonal fruits and vegetables and share recipes.

They will also review best practices for water conservation, weed control and more. The event is part of the “Second Saturday Garden Walks,” an educational series on the second Saturday of each month through September.
