PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Fine Arts Center will host a a celebration of the winter solstice, “Fire in the Night,” from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
The free celebration will be at the center at 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
“Fire in the Night” will begin with warm drinks inside the center, where guests can make glow-in-the-dark solstice crowns if wanted.
At 8 p.m., they will walk down to Webster’s Woods meadow with flashlights and crowns.
Beside the steel “Nest Sacrifice” sculpture, guests will listen to a brief reading before all lights are turned off to allow them to spend a couple of minutes in the dark of the longest night of the year.
At 8:19 — the exact moment of solstice — Gallery and Program Director Sarah Jane and Mark Fessler, the artist who made “Nest,” will light a fire in the top basket of it.
This will be a one-time event just for solstice night, Jane has said.
After this finale, the solstice observers will walk back up together to the center.
