Poets discuss dance and poetry

PORT ANGELES — Mary Moore Easter and Lillo Way on Thursday will share stories from their careers as dancers and choreographers and discuss how dance, music and theater have influenced the structure and style of their poems.

Their Studium Generale presentation, “Dancing the Words: A Conversation and Reading with Mary Moore Easter and Lillo Way,” will be at 12:30 p.m. in Peninsula College’s Little Theater, and will also be streamed live on Zoom at https://pencol-edu.zoom.us/j/88082575506. The meeting ID is 880 8257 5506.

Easter is the author of “Free Papers” (2021), “The Body of the World” (Minnesota Book Award in Poetry Finalist, 2019) and “Walking from Origins; From the Flutes of Our Bones” (2020).

A Pushcart Prize-nominated poet, and Cave Canem Fellow, she is an emerita professor of dance at Carleton College.

Way’s poetry collection, “Lend Me Your Wings,” described by Ellen Bass as “rich in music and in imagination…a celebration and a joy,” was released in 2021 by Shanti Arts Publishing. Her chapbook, “Dubious Moon,” won the Slapering Hol Press Chapbook Contest.

Her poems have won the E.E. Cummings Award and a Florida Review Editors’ Prize.

Her writing has appeared in such journals as New Letters, Poet Lore, Tampa Review, Louisville Review, Poetry East and in many anthologies.

Way has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation for her choreographic work involving poetry.
