PORT TOWNSEND — Poet Judith Adams, a Humanities Washington speaker and Whidbey Island resident, will present “A Fierce Language: Falling in Love with Poetry” at the Jefferson County Historical Society’s First Friday Lecture at 7 tonight.

Adams’s lecture will be in council chambers at historic City Hall at 540 Water St. A $5 donation is suggested.

Drawing on diverse poets, including the contributions of Washington state’s poets, Adams will take her audience on a journey to rediscover the music, power, humor and strength of poetry, showing how it can radically enhance, change and even save lives, organizers said.

She’ll also discuss the joy of reciting poetry by heart, listen to audience members’ experience with poetry and lead exercises to fire up the poet in all of us, according to a news release.

Judith Adams is an English-born poet who has lived in the U.S. since 1976.

She has published four books of poetry and recorded several albums of her work.

Her poems have been published in numerous magazines and anthologies.

Adams has taken poetry to patients in the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and held readings at the Frye Art Museum.

She has conducted poetry workshops for youth and adults and worked as a teacher for children with disabilities in Waldorf Schools.
