Poetry, music tonight at RoseWind Common House

PORT TOWNSEND — Three artists of word and song will join forces for a house concert at 7 tonight at the RoseWind Common House.

“A Night of Poetry and Music” will feature blues poet Gary Lilley, jazz-tinged Americana songwriter Jean Mann and poet-singer Margo Lauritzen at 3131 Haines St. Admission will be by donation.

Lilley has taught, written and performed for many years in Port Townsend.

A prize-winning poet, creative writing teacher and blues musician originally from Sandy Cross, N.C., he was a longtime resident of Washington, D.C., where he was a founding member of the Black Rooster Collective.

He received the D.C. Commission on the Arts Fellowship for Poetry in 1996 and again in 2000, and earned a Master’s of Fine Arts degreein poetry from Warren Wilson College in 2002. Gary is the author of four poetry collections: “Alpha Zulu,” “Black Poem,” “The Reprehensibles” and “The Subsequent Blues.”

Mann performs on tenor and acoustic guitars, ukulele and harmonica, all to accompany a texture-laden vocal style. With seven CDs in her catalogue, Mann has toured nationally since 2000 and made her European debut in 2014.

Lauritzen, a Seattle native, has been making music since she first recorded herself on a Walkman Pro in the early ’90s and sculpted bits of melody and poetry into song. She has been in numerous bands and produced an original musical called “A Warehouse Dream,” which she revived last year for its 20th anniversary.

The RoseWind Common House is a shoes-off, fragrance-free facility. Light snacks are provided and the audience is invited to bring beverages.
