PNW Trio to perform at college

PORT ANGELES — Jennifer Nelson, Wendy Wilhelmi and Francine Peterson will perform as the PNW Trio as part of the 2019 Maier Hall Concert Series on Tuesday.

The trio will perform at 7 p.m. at Maier Hall on the Peninsula College Port Angeles campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at tinyurl.com/PDN-PNW-Trio.

Nelson last appeared in the Maier Hall Concert Series in 2013 as the clarinetist of Trio Seraphim.

The members of the PNW Trio have been friends and colleagues for decades, and are all very busy freelance musicians in Seattle.

Individually, they have performed with most of the major orchestras and professional theaters in the Pacific Northwest region, as well as playing on hundreds of recordings for motion pictures, television and video games, according to Kari Desser, Peninsula College spokeswoman.

During Tuesday’s performance, they also will premiere “Triology” by Peninsula College faculty composer David P. Jones.

When not performing with PNW Trio Nelson, who is on the faculty of University of Puget Sound, holds down the principal clarinet chair with the Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Auburn Symphony Orchestras.

She also can be heard on clarinet and saxophone with the Seattle Symphony and the Seattle Opera, as well as in the pit orchestras at Fifth Avenue and Paramount Theaters in Seattle.

She has provided the woodwind sounds on many movies, television shows and video games.

She performed with the New York City Opera National Tour and was a member of the national touring company for “Phantom of the Opera.”

Her orchestral and recital performances have taken her to Mexico, Japan, Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria, Honduras, and most recently, India.

Peterson is an affiliate artist at University of Puget Sound and is a faculty member at Pacific Lutheran University.

She has performed on bassoon and contrabassoon with the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra, the Auburn Symphony and Northwest Sinfonietta, where she currently holds the principal bassoon chair.

An active freelance and teacher in the Puget Sound area, she also has played many shows at 5th Avenue Theater. Peterson is a member of the Camus Wind Quintet and teaches at the Marrowstone Music Festival.

She has, for many years, served as a coach for the Seattle Youth Symphony program and maintains a large, private studio.

Wilhelmi is active as a teacher and performer throughout the Pacific Northwest, frequently playing with such ensembles as the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, Northwest Sinfonietta and Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra.

For two seasons, she served as assistant principal flute and piccolo of the Vancouver (BC) Symphony and prior to that engagement was a regular member of the Spokane Symphony for 10 years.

She also is active in the studio recording industry and can be heard playing flute, piccolo and alto flute on numerous commercial and movie soundtracks including “Eloise at the Plaza,” “About Schmidt,” “Die Hard 3” and “Air Bud.”

In addition to her orchestral engagements, she has been involved in a variety of chamber music ventures, most recently participating in the 2009 Seattle Chamber Music Festival winter season and the 2009 Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival.

A former student of Walfrid Kujala, she was principal flute of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. In 1998, Wilhelmi won first place in the National Flute Association’s Piccolo Artist Competition.
