Planned Parenthood centennial celebrated Saturday in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend’s Advocates for Better Healthcare will celebrate Planned Parenthood’s centennial Saturday with birthday cake, health care speakers, live music and dancing.

The celebration and fundraiser for Planned Parenthood will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Oscar Erickson building at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 4907 Landes St.

Tickets cost $25 online at plannedparenthood centennial.com and include one’s beverage of choice: beer, wine, cider or a non-alcoholic drink.

Scheduled speakers

Speakers include Jack Slowriver, Planned Parenthood’s area services director; Cheri Van Hoover, a certified nurse-midwife, health policy instructor for Philadelphia University and small-business owner in Port Hadlock who formerly worked for Planned Parenthood and who is now a candidate for the Jefferson Healthcare board of commissioners; Susan O’Brien, Jefferson County Public Health family nurse practitioner; and Debbi Steele, coordinator for local Indivisible group Sunrise Huddle.

Port Townsend baker Sarah Spaeth donated one of her cakes, which will be available as a silent auction item during the reception portion of the event from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Live music will be performed by The Norns, a Scandinavian folk band, and The Midnight Train Blues Band — both of which donated their musical talent to the celebration.

Tax-deductible donations accepted during the event will benefit Planned Parenthood’s Northwest clinics in Washington, Idaho, Alaska and Hawaii.

Advocates for Better Healthcare (ABH) formed in March 2017 as a section of the Indivisible group in Port Townsend, according to a press release.

“Millions of families rely on Planned Parenthood for their health services and will be without care should those clinics close,” ABH coordinator Linda Martin said.

“We are dedicated to ensuring those services remain available and will continue to actively work to improve health care for all Americans.”

The centennial’s sponsors include Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest, Dove House Advocacy Services, Finnriver Farm & Cidery, Jefferson County Public Health, the Jefferson Healthcare Women’s Clinic and Thunderbull Productions.

Planned Parenthood opened doors on its first clinic Oct. 16, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
