Pigments, textures and glass featured in Second Saturday Art Walk

PORT ANGELES — Studio Bob will present “Pigments of My Imagination,” works by oil painter Grace Shepard Sand, with an opening night and artist reception during Second Saturday Art Walk.

The opening night and artist reception at the studio at 118½ E. Front St., are slated for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday during the art walk.

The gallery also will be open between noon and 3 p.m. Sunday.

A no-host bar will offer beer and wine in The Loom during the opening.

Sand, a San Diego native, moved to Sequim in 1990.

She began painting after visiting an art show with her two children. She decided to take lessons in 1967.

“My style of oil painting is loose and is influenced by impressionism,” she said in a press release. “I like to paint plein aire.”

Her influences include Sebastian Capella and Barbara T. Roy, both of La Jolla, Calif.; and Sergei Bongart of Santa Monica, Calif.

“Painting is such a joy and I’ve met wonderful friends through art,” she said.

The evening before Saturday’s art walk, Bar N9NE will present 2nd Friday Art Rock (2FAR).

Bar N9NE, 229 W. First St., will “shake the trees” by featuring internationally renowned artist Nathan Shields and locally grown band SuperTrees at 9 p.m.

A $3 cover charge helps support musicians and artists, the owners said.

Though best known for his work with pancakes — see saipan cakes.com — Shields, a Port Angeles artist, also works in a variety of media.

At Bar N9NE, he will have an interactive art exhibit showcasing his recent work in relief printmaking in wood and linoleum — see nathanshields.com.

Audience members will be able to make and take home their own prints.

SuperTrees members say they rely on the band’s roots to stand tall. Harry Bidasha (drums) and Rudy Maxion (bass) anchor the rock ’n’ roll band. Steve Koehler’s and Dan Lieberman’s guitar work and singing branch out into a wide range of styles.

And, with SuperTrees, audience members are in the band as they write lyrics and play percussion at 2FAR. For more about the band, see the SuperTrees Facebook page.

Also during Saturday’s Art Walk:

• The Landing Artists Studio, 115 E. Railroad Ave., Suite 103, will feature the work of seamstress artist Jerre Akers.

Akers is a seamstress who specializes in upcycling old clothing.

She designs clothes, accessories, stationery and stuffed toys from items she finds at local thrift shops.

For information, see www.face book.com/landing artistsstudio.

• Harbor Art Gallery, 114 N. Laurel St., will feature glass artist Susan Kantowitz during the month of August.

Kantowitz will be at the gallery during the Second Saturday Art Walk from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

“I have always enjoyed glass of all types,” Kantowitz said.

“As an undergraduate I studied art history and the psychology of perception. During that time I had an opportunity to spend a summer in Europe viewing first hand the brilliant cathedrals and their stained glass.”

She said her “inspiration comes from nature and trying to express its colors and forms while experimenting with many different techniques. At present, I’m exploring the flow characteristics of glass that occurs when glass is heated to a relatively high temperature, beyond fusing temperature, and held there for several hours.”
