PORT TOWNSEND — Tom Saknit and Loran Scruggs are the Port Townsend Gallery’s featured artists for July.
The gallery at 715 Water St. is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, as well as by appointment.
Saknit presents his newest suite of Redacted Photography, “On The Waterfront: Three Cities, One Vision.”
Nine new pieces from Seattle, San Francisco, and New York City remind viewers of a time when we traveled and bring renewed hope to travel once again, said the artist in a press release.
“So much of my work is taken from distant shores that I decided this time to honor these three great American cities,” he said.
“It’s important to remember, one does not have to travel far to experience richly.”
He said that his use of staccato line and negative space is his attempt to bridge the mechanical world of photography with the organic world of painting.
He describes his work as a minimalist expression of a fragmented memory, with negative space creating a dialogue that allows the viewer to fill in the blanks.
Scruggs has been making art out of tin cans since 1991, the first piece being a 3D dragon head.
She primarily worked in 3D, creating patterns on paper and then transferring them to tin. Cutting, folding, rivets and slot and tab construction were methods used. Bottle caps became a large part of her work later when she started making whistles.
The 2D flat piece plaques started shortly after that, created by cutting and nailing tin to wood.
“Loran’s artwork is about joy, play and reuse,” organizers said in the release.
“Printed tin and bottle caps are joyous to her, with their color and glints of shine. Labels and advertising iconography are often brightly colored with simple words and images very much like children’s educational toys.
“She is always on the lookout for bottle caps, tin cans and has a large collection of both. Friends and acquaintances also collect and give her tins and bottle caps.”
