Photography, sculpture, painting on display during Port Angeles Art Walk

PORT ANGELES — On Saturday, Harbor Art will feature two photographers, vastly different in perspectives.

Second Weekend Art Walkgoers will be treated to Richard Kohler’s snapshots of earth, sky and water alongside Eric Neurath’s expansive seascapes and landscapes.

Kohler entered the world of digital photography in 2010, while Neurath began a career as a freelance commercial photographer in 1979.

Kohler sees pictures in terms of their most basic elements — lines, shapes, textures and colors — while Neurath describes his approach as “straightforward rather than trendy.”

Kohler enjoys the abstract, while Neurath relies on an understanding of the purpose of each image, according to the artists’ biographies.

Harbor Art will host an artist reception for these photographers from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Other attractions today, Saturday and Sunday at the Second Weekend Art Walk include:

• Studio Bob, 118½ E. Front St., will host an artist reception for sculpture artist Kevin Willson and digital/traditional artist Gary Allen Smith on Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The exhibit also will open Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.

Willson began creating metal sculpture in 1973.

After five years, he ventured into stone sculpture and moved to Europe to expand his sculptural skills with stone.

For the next nine years, he lived in Spain, Italy and Switzerland, sculpting with various stones as well as bronze. Since returning to Washington, Willson has continued to create sculpture. Aside from selling his work by appointment from his studio, Willson’s work can be found at Harbor Art.

Smith, who recently moved to the Olympic Peninsula, creates both digital and traditional art.

He obtained a dual visual arts and computer science bachelor’s degree from the University of California San Diego in 1978. In addition to a career in software engineering, Smith explored digital art and traditional forms, such as oil, pastels, acrylics and watercolors.

Smith has exhibited his award-winning “Explorations of a Virtual Geography” digital prints across multiple venues. In 2009, he obtained a certification in advanced digital print, photographic and animation arts through San Diego Community College System. Now, after a six-year hiatus, he will bring an updated version of his “Explorations of a Virtual Geography” to Port Angeles.

Willson and Smith’s work will be on display at Studio Bob through Dec. 5.

During the Art Walk, a no-host bar will serve beer and wine in The Loom.

• Bar N9NE, 228 W. First St., will feature a “delicious and colorful stew” of talent at 9 p.m. today for 2nd Friday Art Rock (2FAR). The event will pair The Crocs and Jeff Tocher.

The Crocs will play a mixed bag of blues, rock, reggae, Americana and funk. The band includes Jason Mogi on banjo, Mike Pace on guitar, Paul Stehr-Green on bass and Terry Smith on drums.

Tocher will paint in his style of “whit and whimsy,” filling space, blending color and creating new flavors.

A $3 cover charge supports the musician and artist.

• The Landing Artists Studio, 115 E. Railroad Ave., Suite 103, will feature handmade ornaments and Christmas gifts, as well as its usual stock of Northwest and marine-inspired art.

Light refreshments, discussions with artists and possible demonstrations will take place Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

• One of a Kind Art Gallery, 115 E. Railroad Ave., plans to entice Art Walk participants Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with woodwork, glass art, pottery and paintings — plus wine, cookies and live music.

“Silver and Gold” will entertain guests as they browse art.
