Permaculture focus of Green Thumb lecture

PORT ANGELES — Veteran Master Gardener Muriel Nesbitt will present information on permaculture, a method for creating a naturally sustainable gardening environment, at noon Thursday.

The free lecture will be in the county commissioners’ meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St.

This presentation is part of the “Green Thumb” education series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners.

According to Nesbitt, permaculture garden design is aimed at creating a culture that has built-in mechanisms to constantly revitalize the earth. It promotes healthy plants and minimizes labor for garden maintenance.

She will explain the history of permaculture and its founders and the principles and philosophy of permaculture.

Nesbitt will discuss the degree of applicability to small gardens as well as commercial agriculture.

She also will review research relative to scientific support of the principles.

Nesbitt, who earned a doctorate in genetics from the University of Washington, retired from teaching biology at the University of California San Diego. She directed the Clallam County Master Gardener program from 2009 to 2012. She is a frequent speaker on sustainable growing and an instructor for the Master Gardener intern training program.

The Master Gardener Green Thumb Garden Tips education series continues on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.
