Performance to explore teen/adult interaction

PORT TOWNSEND — As part of its new Teen Initiative, the Mandala Center for Change presents “Shout Out or Shut Down: a Theatre Dialogue Between Teens and Adults,” featuring the Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble.

One performance only is planned.

It will be at 4 p.m. today at the Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona St.

Admission is free although donations are welcomed. No advance reservations will be taken; seating is limited so arrive early.

Audience members will watch a short scenario portraying a tense interaction between a high school student and a teacher.

The scene then will be deconstructed via a technique known as the Rainbow of Desire and serve as a springboard for the audience to explore the various dynamics at play and gain a deeper understanding of what may be informing the beliefs and motivations of each side, as well as within oneself.

“It is just accepted that adults are the authority and that young people have to listen,” said 16 year-old Hannah Bahls.

“That power dynamic is something that most teens experience every day. It makes me wonder what is behind that mask of authority.”

Said Marc Weinblatt, Mandala Center co-director: “I am always so energized and inspired working with teenagers. They bring tremendous wisdom but consistently speak of not being taken seriously by adults.

“It’s important to take the time to listen and then truly hear what they have to say. Our future depends on it.”

Created by Brazilian visionary, Augusto Boal, Theatre of the Oppressed is a form of popular community-based education that uses theater as a tool for critical thinking and social change.

Now in its 18th season, Port Townsend’s Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble is a multi-ethnic, multi-generational troupe of local actor/activists who use interactive theatre as a tool for awareness and social change.

Poetic Justice’s Teen Initiative is funded in part by the Port Townsend Arts Commission.
