Peninsula Singers present songs for the season

SEQUIM — Peninsula Singers and conductor Jerome Wright are gearing up to sing the songs of the season with their upcoming fall concert.

Starting at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Peninsula Singers’ choral musicians will perform a variety of holiday classics and light-hearted pieces in “The Magical Season: Advent to Christmas” in the sanctuary of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Order tickets in advance at the Odyssey Bookstore in Port Angeles and The Joyful Noise Music Center and Bauer Interior Design in Sequim.

They also can be purchased from members of Peninsula Singers or at the door.

The dress rehearsal will be at 7 p.m. today and is open to the public with a $5 admission.

Patricia Guthrie, Peninsula Singers president, said the first half of the concert features a classical selection of three short advents: Buxtehude’s Advent Cantata “Rejoice, Beloved Christians,” Pergolesi’s elegant “Magnificat” (The Song of Mary) and Joseph Haydn’s “Small Organ Mass,” with guest organist Sandy Rawson.

Peninsula Singers accompanist Linda Dowdell will play piano and harpsichord. The concert’s first half will have a chamber orchestra as well.

The second part of the program transitions into lighter holiday pieces such as Linda Dowdell’s setting of “Ring out, Wild Bells!” and songs by contemporary composers Morten Lauridsen, John Rutter and Frederick Silver.

The concert will conclude with an arrangement of “Hark! The Herald Angels!” by Jackson Berkey of Mannheim Steamroller Fame and an audience singalong for the final verse.

There also will be a short intermission with some treats.
