PORT ANGELES — If you’re “In a Sentimental Mood” or if you just “Fall in Love Too Easily,” you’re invited to warm up your “Body and Soul” with the Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble at Jazz at the Pirate Union Building (PUB) at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The event is free and open to the public at the PUB, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
Visitors can bring a sack lunch, buy lunch at the Pirate Cove on campus, bring books to study or just listen.
Robbin Eaves of Joyce will sing standards by Duke Ellington and Jule Styne, and the college’s 16-piece band also will play music by John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Thad Jones, Bill Holman, Richie Beirach and others.
The performers in this band represent some of the very best jazz the North Olympic Peninsula has to offer, according to a news release.
From Port Angeles, the band features Bob Bailey (alto sax), Andy Geiger (tenor sax), Richard “Doc” Thorson (tenor sax), Kelsey Cammack (tenor sax), Kris Grier (trumpet), Joel Ricci (trumpet), Tyler Hansen (trumpet), Ron Daylo (trombone), Tyler Benedict (bass trombone), David Jones (keyboards/director) and Nicia Pfeffer (drums).
Sequim has provided the band with Kate Powers (electric violin).
From Port Townsend, the band draws John Adams (alto/soprano saxes) and Lorenzo Jones (baritone sax).
Bassist John Sanders lives in Quilcene, and one of the drummers, Tor Brandes, makes the trek all the way from Neah Bay.
Jazz standards
The music styles include jazz standards, cool jazz of the 1950s, modern jazz classics of the 1960s and jazz/rock fusion of the early 1970s.
The Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble members are dedicating the winter quarter concerts to the memory of George Snyder, who passed away recently.
Snyder was a faithful member of the PC Jazz Ensemble for a few years and, through his activities as a trumpeter, arranger and bandleader, was a significant force in the North Olympic jazz community for many years.
