Peninsula College to host free concerts

PORT ANGELES —Peninsula College will host a series of free concerts at its Port Angeles campus.

The college’s jazz ensemble will kick off the series with “Jazz in the PUB” at noon Tuesday at the Pirate Union Building.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch or purchase one at the college’s market and deli to enjoy during the performance.

The Saxologists, a saxophone quartet from the Sequim City Band, will join the Peninsula College Concert Band for a concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Maier Performance Hall.

Steve Treseler, a Seattle-based saxophonist and educator, will lead a jazz improvisation workshop for college and area high school music students in Maier Performance Hall from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Jazz Ensemble also will present its Winter Jazz Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at Maier Performance Hall.

The concert will feature saxophonist Steve Treseler as a guest performer.

“I’m excited to have Steve Treseler perform with the Jazz Ensemble,” said Marge Rosen, the ensemble’s director. “He is a phenomenal musician and a respected educator, and his workshops are fun, accessible and inspiring. I am grateful for the support of a McFredrick’s grant from the Peninsula College Foundation, which made it possible to bring him to our community.”

The concert will include classic and modern arrangements by Quincy Jones, Benny Golson, Mary Lou Williams, Jessika Smith and Vern Sielert.

Vocalists Robbin Eaves and James Morley will join the ensemble to bring the Great American Songbook to life.

The series will finish with a trumpet recital by Kaitlyn Wood at 7 p.m. Friday at Maier Performance Hall.

Wood, a Peninsula College student, will be accompanied by pianist Linda Dowdell in a program featuring a mix of classical and modern pieces.

All the concerts are free and open to the public. The Peninsula College Foundation will accept donations on behalf of the music department.
