Peninsula College offers jazz concerts

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble plans two free concerts this fall, with the first on Thursday.

Both concerts will be at the Port Angeles campus of Peninsula College at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Jazz in the PUB will be presented during lunch at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Attendees can bring their own lunches or purchase meals from the college’s Market & Deli.

Fall Jazz Concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Dec. 5 in Maier Performance Hall.

“I’m excited to present a full big band performing a wide variety of jazz from Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Count Basie to contemporary compositions by Pat Metheny, Maria Schneider and Portland composer Jessika Smith,” said the Jazz Ensemble’s new director Marge Rosen of Port Angeles.

Performers are from across the North Olympic Peninsula.

The 16-piece big band features freshman Avery Saul of Port Angeles singing an arrangement of the famous Sinatra tune “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” a popular cha-cha “Sway,” and other picks from the Great American Songbook.

Robbin Eaves of Joyce will sing the classic “Why Don’t You Do Right” and a holiday favorite.

From Port Angeles are Jim Bradbury, Nancy McPherson and Larry Madsen on trumpet and conductor Rosen on drums.

From Sequim are John Wethrill on piano, Kendall Melton on bass, Jayne Morrison on alto sax, Jeff Fox and Andy Geiger on tenor sax, Anton Hilmisson on baritone sax, Dan James on trumpet, and Jeff Dingle, Savana Hickman and Tom Hartig on trombone.

John Adams on alto sax and Dan Powell on trombone commute from the Port Townsend area.
