Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble to present free fall concert

PORT ANGELES — Live jazz composed between 1936 and 2017 will emanate across the Peninsula College campus in Port Angeles on Tuesday.

The Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble will present its fall quarter concert — free to the public — at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Maier Performance Hall on the campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

The 17-piece Jazz Ensemble will play music by Jerome Kern, Count Basie, Thelonious Monk, Average White Band, Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra.

“The various arrangements take full advantage of the many possible shades of jazz,” according to a news release. “The performers in the band represent some of the very best jazz that the North Olympic Peninsula has to offer.”

Robbin Eaves of Joyce and Olga Palenga of Port Angeles will sing tunes composed by or associated with Frank Sinatra, the Andrews Sisters, Woody Herman, Dinah Washington, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Dave Brubeck.

Two of conductor David P. Jones’s recent compositions will be premiered, as well as his arrangement of the classic fusion ballad “A Remark You Made” by Joe Zawinul.

Performers from Port Angeles include Palenga (clarinet, piano and vocals), Bob Bailey (alto sax), Andy Geiger (tenor sax), Craig Buhler (tenor sax), Kelsey Cammack (baritone sax), WesLee Laughman (trumpet), Clare Wegener (euphonium, percussion and vocals), Ron Daylo (trombone) and David Jones (keyboards/director).

From Sequim are Kate Powers (electric violin), Bonnie Booth (trombone), Reuben Moon (bass trombone) and Nicia Pfeffer (drums).

John Adams (alto/soprano saxes) calls Port Townsend home, while Gerardo Reyes (euphonium) hails from Forks. Bassist John Sanders lives in Quilcene and drummer Tor Brandes makes the journey from Neah Bay.

The musical styles of the full band selections range from “Pick Yourself Up” by Jerome Kern from the 1930s (presented in the more modern, cha-cha arrangement) to 1950s-era classics, ranging from the Basie Book to Thelonious Monk, and several significant offerings of the rock/jazz fusion canon.
